The falling snow sparkled in the streetlights like falling stars. When they walked back to Hackenstrasse, the police were removing their tape from the street.

“I can finally go home. And just in time, too, because it looks like a nasty storm is moving in.” Dieter held out his hand. “Good luck with your search. I hope you find your client’s artwork.” He pulled out his wallet and fished around for a slip of paper. “Here, this is Helmut’s phone number. Kurt gave it to me in case of emergencies. He seems pretty upset now, but maybe later, you can try talking with him again.”

Zelda doubted Helmut would help her further but took the paper anyway. “Thank you so much for your help tonight. I really do appreciate it. Take care.” Zelda shook Dieter’s hand, then watched as he walked up his staircase.

She turned back to the main street, hoping to find a cab when she glanced at her watch.

“Crap!” Her yelp made Jacob and the remaining police force turn.

“Sorry, I didn’t realize it was so late.” Zelda blushed then grabbed Jacob’s hand before running down the street to find a taxi. As a cabbie drove them to the Hofbräuhaus, Zelda turned on her phone and saw several missed calls from her parents and Huub. There was also one new message from Vincent. All it said was, “I’m on my way.”

“Great, now he gets in touch,” Zelda groaned, hating to be the bearer of bad news. Had Huub already caught him up or was Vincent still under the assumption that she had recovered a looted painting this evening? She began to type in, “Vermeer gone. Dealer dead,” when she realized that it was pointless. There would be time enough to catch him up in person, after he arrived. Tonight, there was nothing more any of them could do. And right now, locating her parents was her top priority. Luckily for her, that was an easy quest. Her mother’s long and somewhat tipsy message made clear that they had truly enjoyed their night and were now back at the hotel and would talk to her and Jacob in the morning.

Knowing they were safe and sound sent a wave of relief through Zelda’s body.

“This has been one hell of a night. You know what, I could use a drink. What do you say we grab a beer at the Hofbräuhaus before we head back to the hotel?”

Jacob hugged her close. “That sounds like a great idea.”
